Professional Biography:

Susan Williams Mayes came to the University of Arkansas after earning a Master of Education degree in Physical Education and 10 years of public school teaching. In her 23 years as an instructor in the Department of Health Science, Kinesiology, Recreation and Dance, she has taught a wide variety of classes in PEAC, DEAC, DNED, KINS, & PHED. She has served as the Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies since 1993, recruiting students, providing entrance advising during orientation, assisting faculty in developing new courses, scheduling of courses, and numerous other assignments as directed by the department head. Susan is a Fayetteville native, receiving both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas. Her 10 years of public school teaching was at Woodland Junior High in Fayetteville. During this time she taught physical education grades 7-9, coached basketball, gymnastics, dance squads, and directed intramurals.

Academic Interests and Accomplishments:

Ms. Mayes' current assignment includes 6 hours administrative responsibilities and 6 hours of teaching per semester. As undergraduate coordinator, she provides support services to approximately 19 faculty members and more than 350 undergraduate students in all aspects of undergraduate departmental affairs. She has a particular interest in academic advising in all areas of HKRD and was recognized by the College of Education and Health Professions in 2000 with the “Outstanding Advising Award.” In addition, Ms. Mayes uses her extensive network of public school personnel to help students with job placements, particularly in the area of coaching.
